Supporting Public Safety two-way radio communications is a requirement we take very seriously. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the International Fire Code (IFC) are the two most prominent code development organizations. Local jurisdictions, Authority Having Jurisdiction, (AHJ) will typically adopt these new building codes. In 2011 many local jurisdictions began enforcing the NFPA 72-2010 and the IFC 510.1 with Appendix J to ensure First Responder radios function reliably inside of buildings. Our Public Safety solutions (VHF, UHF, 700 MHz, 800 MHz) meet or exceed the State Fire Codes and we will adjust to meet or exceed local jurisdictions as required.

What is DAS?

Fiber DAS (Active DAS)

An active DAS is the more common type and often the choice of larger organizations looking to leverage their investment down the road for other wireless services or when layering cellular coverage frequencies onto the DAS. These systems require fiber-optic cabling between a common head end and remote equipment locations. These numerous remote locations also require Active equipment at each point to convert the signals from optical back to Radio Frequencies (RF). There are a various types of Active DAS. Each type has its inherent value, and the best approach for each organization is determined during the consulting and design phases of a project.

Passive DAS

A passive DAS is a system typically comprised of a Bi-Directional Amplifier (BDA) or a Repeater. Signal is distributed via a network infrastructure of coaxial cables and antennas. There is generally no fiber cabling involved and minimal equipment/electronics. These types of systems are generally specific in nature (purpose or frequency) and are not conducive to expansion or multi-carrier solutions. They are commonly used as a fundamental solution for lower frequencies, such as Public Safety coverage, and in situations where there is no requirement for additional growth. Due to the reduced amount of electronics as well as the exclusion of fiber optics, there are some recognizable cost savings when utilizing a Passive DAS.
